Problems with the iPad and Streaming Video

www.beet.tv While the iPad may be a marvelous and elegant new kind of computing device, and our show looks very nice on it indeed, the inconsistent WiFi connection and subsequent buffering is insufferable for consuming streaming video. From our own tests and with conversations with others, we find that WiFi connectivity is simply not stable enough to sustain consistent streaming. For downloaded applications and Quicktime files the connection is not a problem, but for streaming videos it is not good. This poor buffering can be the case in WiFi networks of speeds as fast 8 MPS, we have found. We concur with the assessment of these limitations of WiFi connectivity reported by Henry Blodget and Michael Arrington. More complaints have been published in a story on CNN.com today. (Update: BBC has a story up.) Unfortunately, the iPad’s only options to connect to the Web are WiFi and then via AT&T in a forthcoming 3G model. iPad Video Ad Integration is Three Months Off for Brigthtcove, Blip.tv, others For content creators and publishers who have labored hard to integrate advertising into online video, there are very limited ways to insert in-stream advertising into clips. Generally speaking, the advertising solution simply doesn’t exist at this time. The device does not support Adobe Flash, which is the primary video publishing medium. For the iPad, ads can technically be inserted, however there is very little way to track and report usage. (Please watch Blip.tv’s Mike Hudack for

Well this sucks. My primary reason for wanting to get an iPad was to stream video over my network. Most of the content would be 720p mkv files as well…

Looks like this won’t be happening :(

The iPad is a load of Bullshit, really it is.. It has no flash media, no camera, it comes in 16 to 32 & 64gig hard drive what a joke, you need to hold it with your hand most of the time so no way hands free friendly. For $650 you can get a high end Note Book with more features & will be more cheaper too!! iPad you suck bigtime!!

who in the fuck pays $500 for a device that only has 16GB of memory? only two of my porn videos will fit on this thing and I already bought over 40 GBs of music on itunes and counting. HTML5 is not that great either, no flash is just retarded, no camera, no usb, no hdmi, shitty 3G from shitty AT&T, god this is a piece of shit.

@jondeak they could easily put it up on Cydia for jailbroken ipads.. then we’d see how crappy the performance would be and agree with Jobs.

@tdrewman flash is common, but not required. the death bells are ringing for it, stop acting like an Adobe stockholder and let it go. Apple might be picky, but they have a valid point and clean breaks are often required in order to move on. So we suck it up and move on.

apple is in a mission to make sure that free content from the internet ends , they don’t want to support flash because they want you to pay 2 to 4 dollars for every stupid game out there ,
And also it prevents free streaming of music and movies .
Go to hell apple

Apple still refuses to support MTS files.
Thats the HD video format used by cameras.

Is there a Windows slate out yet?

@tdrewman no, it sucked before apple said anything. At least from a security perspective.

@timothysvids look you don’t know what happens in the year 2016. Every browser company uses it for ads so they have to pay royalties. Have you seen the iad campaign that is coming out in June. yipes you are going to get a piece of apple advertising on every page and since their earnings are going to be 40% of the revenue then watch how aggressive it will be. Don’t be fooled. Apple wants their iads, on their browser, watching their ads on a completely closed internet experience.

@uaboob Actually, if you are using the codec for steaming internet video which is free to end users, you don’t need to pay any royalties. This was announced in February 2010 (by MPEG LA)
